This French mystery had me daydreaming of Agatha Christie. The author did a tremendous job setting the stage. The reader can clearly picture the scenes and the characters. I felt that the themes were revolving around racism and police corruption- which are still trendy topics today.
This is the second book in the series. The main character, Mazarelle, was personable, yet dry. He definitely was an officer. The rest of the characters were interesting.
The murders were curious, and made me want to follow Mazarelle.

I will say the beginning felt washy. Nothing really jived together, until about a quarter of the way into the book. After that, it was smooth sailing for an afternoon.

I hadn’t read the first Mazarelle mystery before reading The Hanged Man’s Tale, but will be doing so now. I hope to get to know Mazarelle a lot better, which might help me to understand some of his choices in this one.
