In a case of “it’s absolutely not you, it’s me” - I just couldn’t get into this book once I received it. There’s nothing wrong with it! The writing is good and I’m sure the plot was going somewhere, but I picked the thing up no fewer than three times, months apart, and...nada. Negative interest level. I feel badly for saying so. Stories of marginalized people (especially those written from an own voices standpoint) are more important than ever right now, and I would have liked to enjoy this one and be able to give it a more substantive review. But not everything is for everybody, I guess. I’m going to pass my ARC on to a friend for whom Ms. Davis’ work might resonate more easily.
