Ah this story. It was a good debut novel. So many great themes - fight the system, girl power, sexism, racism, classism. All the right isms to make this an interesting read.

The story follows a group of girls that escape a pleasure house. Their families have sold them to the house to "make sure they have a better life" than what is out in the desserts. The dystopian world is full of hunger, hard labor, and death. This is an exploration of sex trafficking, and how those running those pleasure houses control the victims.

While on the run, girls are trying to escape those pursuing them as well as change their fate and remove the marks that mark them property of their house.

The epic journey was interesting and hard. Sometimes I thought it was slow in pacing, and I lost some interest. The ending left so many unanswered questions, but I hope it's due to a second book and we will see how these girls live after this first book.

Overall really, not a bad debut. I liked these characters and felt their pain. Each one was very distinctive. You could feel their personalities and stories and understand the need to keep going.

Wild west (not Westworld as this is definitely not sci-fi or futuristic) meets handmaid's tale. Highly recommend for a great girl gang book.
