"The Godmothers" by Monica McInerney is the first book that I have read by this author, and it certainly will not be the last!
The novel follows the life of Eliza Miller. Eliza's life with her troubled mother was never stable. They moved around a lot, her mother suffered from Bipolar disorder, had a criminal record, and was not truthful with Eliza when Eliza questioned her about her father (who she had never met). The only constant in Eliza's unstable life, were her two godmothers, Olivia and Maxie (longtime friends of her mother). Just as Eliza is getting ready to live for university, she comes home from a yearly visit with one of her godmothers, to find her mother dead. With the support of her godmothers (financially and emotionally), Eliza pursues her degree at university. For the next thirteen years, Eliza is cautious, lonely and dedicated to her thankless boss. Due to circumstances beyond her control, she finds herself out of a job and without an apartment. Timing is perfect as she receives a call from one of her godmothers, asking her to come for a visit and surprise her other godmother who is getting married. A new adventure is about to begin for Eliza. She will find answers to questions that she has been harboring since childhood, and she will meet interesting people along the way.
Monica McInerney is a gifted storyteller who keeps her readers enthralled. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I would definitely suggest adding it to your reading list!
There is an excerpt at the end of this novel from Ms. McInerney's next novel, "Those Faraday Girls". Definitely adding this book to my "must read" list!
