Stories can be a great escape from the news around us and The Godmothers gives the reader a chance to immerse themselves in different corners of the world (Australia, England, Ireland) and get to know a set of quirky characters. Eliza is newly unemployed and finds herself completely taking herself out of her routine - traveling abroad to reunite with her beloved godmothers and learn more about her past and some family secrets. I do have a soft spot for stories with found families and a hodge podge of characters that are likeable in their own ways (grouchy older curmudgeons, precocious youngsters, et al.) and The Godmothers delivers on these counts even as it takes on some tougher issues like family relationships (especially parent-child) and mental health and substance abuse. Ultimately this is an adult, feel-good book that's easy to read and satisfying.
