I loved "The Bear and the Nightingale," so I was eager to read this second book in the trilogy. It was just as good as the first one for me! I love Arden's writing style--it's very lush and reminiscent of the fairy tales the books are based on, but it doesn't lose any of its readability, which can be a problem (at least for me) with some writers. For my part, it didn't seem to have any of that "Middle Book Syndrome" that a lot of trilogies have, even with its juggling of all the various characters Vasya meets up with over the course of the novel. (Solovey continues to be a favorite; I love that talking horse so much.)

Like the first book, "The Girl in the Tower" starts off a bit slowly, but the ball gets rolling fairly soon and the book keeps a nice pace from there on in. A very enjoyable book. Highly recommend!
