The Bear and the Nightingale (first book in the trilogy)is easily one of my favorite fantasy books of all time and this 2nd novel didn't disappoint. Let me also say that fantasy isn't usually my most read genre (I gravitate to thrillers/mystery/literary fiction/historical fiction), but every once in a while there's a fantasy book so hyped I have to check it out.

Arden has built a completely magical world that I can actually believe is real and picture myself in. The relationship between Vasya and Morozko only continues to grow in this book and leaves the reader longing for more. The focus may be on Vasya, but I found myself really rooting for the frost demon!

There are elements of history, magical realism, religious conflict all tied together with love and a heroine who exemplified feminism in an atmospheric world that is built against that very ideal.

I was completely enthralled during the entirety of this book and if you're looking for some escapism, I highly recommend giving this a go (along with both of the other books in the series!).
