I read the Bear and the Nightingale and LOVED it, so I was super excited to get my hands on this book. The Girl in the Tower did NOT disappoint!

Vasya is a young woman now, with tough choices to make. After being cast out of her village and labeled a witch, she now has to decide...marriage, or life in a convent? Vasya chooses...neither. Big surprise, right? This is a girl who doesn’t want to feel trapped by anyone or anything, so she disguises herself as a boy and flees. There’s a world to explore, and she intends to do that on HER terms. She fights a group of bandits in the woods, and catches the attention of the Grand Prince. She finds favor in him for now, but if anyone discovers her secret identity, she’s doomed.

The kingdom is under threat from mysterious voices...voices that Vasya can hear. The kingdom needs her help, and she calls upon the magical forces that she is so in tune with.

I’m not very knowledgeable about Russian folklore, but this book really captured my attention. The rich imagery and language that the author used captivated me, and has motivated me to dive more into the literature of this corner of the world.
