First, this is the second book in a series. I have not read the first, but I'm not sure it was necessary. I adore re-tellings of folk lore and this one is lovely. The description calls the writing lyrical and that is certainly an apt word. Katherine Arden has a wonderful skill with words and an ability to paint lush pictures with an economy of language that is striking. Things both beautiful and repulsive are described with loving care. The writing is somehow both magical and ominous. The excerpt was enough to make me both curious about the previous book in the series and want to read more of this second book. While I appreciated the writing, though, and my curiosity was piqued, I'm not quite sure I will enjoy or like the book, if that makes any sense.
