This is Katherine Arden's sequel to The Bear and the Nightingale. The Girl in the Tower is story reminiscent of a Russian folktale with mesmerizing descriptions and harmonic prose. Each page leaves the reader with a multitude of grown up imagery and darkness with a bit of suspense and talk of witches. Arden captures the reader's attention with her ability to create a sense of sitting inside the cabin, feeling the heat from the fire, filling our nostrils with the scents of the charred logs, the whoosh of the wind, and all the while leaving one to embrace our goose bumped flesh as we listen to the storytelling unfold before bed. Part fantasy, part medieval horror, this is no bedtime story for the weak at heart. Katherine Arden seems to be an author to be reckoned with.
