This was not the followup I expected to The Bear and the Nightingale, but only because it was even better than I imagined. I loved learning more about what Vasya and her family did next. Everyone was so realistic and compelling from the first book that I had no trouble picking up where I had left off, even though it had been a year between reading the two books.

The additional political and historical elements were a bit offputting at first because I had been expecting far more of the fairy-tale elements, but those definitely emerged, and I came to appreciate Arden's fine historical descriptions. I expected to learn a lot about mythology, and I learned a lot about Russian history too! It was a really successful blend of the many elements.
