I loved the Bear and the Nightingale, and have been recommending it to everyone I know since I read it, so I was highly excited for this follow up. I was not disappointed and loved the second book. The Girl in the Tower continues the story of Vasya, we also get to know Vasya's two siblings better in the second book.

This book has so much to love! Magic, fairy tales, and historical fiction! The book is so well researched and has so much about political maneuvers and the time period without being dull. There are fantastical elements that are well written and place.

Arden writes such good and varied female characters who show strength in different ways. There is Vasya who discards traditional feminine roles showing strength through fighting and cunning. There is Olga who shows strength in traditional feminine rolls of motherhood and being a wife, pulling weight politically. There is Olga's daughter Marya who is fearless and marches to her own drum.

I can't wait for the Winter Witch!
