Wow! I'm really impressed by these first few chapters. The writing in The Bear and the Nightingale was also very atmospheric, and the tone stayed in line with what you would expect of a classic fairytale, but Arden seems to have upped her game with the sequel. That prologue really whisked me away.
I felt the ending of The Bear and the Nightingale left a lot of questions unanswered, and I am glad to see that the characters' stories are being continued from book one.
