This is book 2 in the Emily Calby series by Dorian Box, a former law professor. Since there are only two books, it’s probably better to start with the first one; however, I only read this one, and it does work well as a standalone. I believe there is enough information about previous events to fill out any of the questions you may have.

The characterization is absolutely amazing. The author gives us so much information about Emily that I got a very real sense of what made her tick. All her actions and thoughts are there to read about. Since she ran from her home when two men raped and murdered her younger sister and mother, and then threatened to kill her if they caught her, she would certainly have some real issues and these are brought out in the story. One thing that is very apparent is the fact that Emily often does things without considering the consequences of her actions , which gets her in trouble. As I got to know her throughout the book, I felt that even though she had committed crimes, she was basically a caring, loyal girl and I hoped that she would survive the book. (I’m not going to tell if she does or not.)

The book is definitely a page turner.
