This was definitely a gritty, interesting introduction to Emily Calby, the sole survivor of a home invasion who has consequently lived on the run. The novel starts with Emily being picked up on a gun charge but becoming mired in more trouble when she is linked to a murder. My issue with the story was a personal one though - as this is the second book in the series, I was missing a lot of the context around the murder charge and Emily's past, and I expect I would have been even more intrigued had I followed Emily in the first book too.
