While I enjoyed this book, I think it definitely could've been better. I've seen in compared to Six of Crows and The Lies of Locke Lamora, and both of those are accurate. I just feel that the characters in both of those series are more fleshed out.

Like Six of Crows, this book features a group of friends working to pull off an impossible heist. In SoC, every character was loveable and distinct, and I can't say the same about this book. While I liked most of the characters, they never felt completely real. Because of this, I wasn't super attached to them or their actions. My personal favorites were Enrique and Hypnos, but even they weren't very different from the rest of the cast of characters.

Many of our characters in this can draw almost a straight parallel to SoC. Severin is Kaz. Laila was Inej. Enrique was Wylan, and Hypnos was Jesper. While all of the relationships in SoC were fairly slow burn, they were present enough for you to keep rooting for them. I didn't feel that in this book. I didn't particularly care if Severin and Laila got together, which was a result of their weaker characterization.

Despite my critiques, I still really enjoyed this book. It has gained a spot among my favorite heist novels, and I'm interested to see where the plot goes with the next book in the series.
