A fascinating world with unpalatable characters. The ending in particular was lackluster. The tragedy is this could have been brilliant - a historical take on Leverage where the thieves are working to undo the pillars of society with magic.
Character motivations were flat and they felt two dimensional. We're told that they are the best at what they do, and yet they manage to fumble every heist in the book - even so-called routine ones.
I only finished it because I told myself it had to get better, and yet the ending undermined the main character's motivation entirely and didn't align with any of the (little) character development we got.
Overall, I was disappointed in this book and wish it had lived up to its hype.
