The Gilded Wolves follows a group of thieves as they take on a daring heist in historical—and magical—Paris. Hotelier and ring-leader Severin lives on the fringes of an elite underground society known as the Order; once heir to one of the Order's Houses, Severin was cast out, banned even from the exclusive auctions that dealt in magical, or "Forged" antiquities. Exclusive auctions that dispersed his family's possessions after their line was (incorrectly) deemed extinguished.

After first painstakingly recovering his family's heirlooms, Severin began selling his skills to other clients. The Order and its Houses have long been in the business of stealing artifacts from other countries and cultures; Severin and his team are only too happy to help return them to their rightful owners.

This brief excerpt manages to introduce all of the main players: Severin, confident and suave; Enrique, nervous and precise; Zofia, brash and playful; and Laila, careful and compassionate. The group mixes with humor and gravity, as easy to laugh with as they are to take seriously in their thieving pursuits. Chokshi writes of a 19th-century Paris full of magic and mystique, one of the most colorful and vibrant magical realism settings I've come across in YA fiction. This little excerpt left me wanting much, much more, and I can't wait to learn how the grand heist goes for this motley crew!
