I've read a lot of historical fiction novels, particularly those set during WWII. This is the first book I've read set during the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials of 1963.

Eva Bruhns works as a Polish translator of business contracts and such. When the Polish translator for the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials is detained in Poland, Eva is called upon to take his place until he can travel to Germany.

She was just a girl during WWII, and therefore has no memory of any of the events. Her eyes are opened and her mind troubled when she becomes involved in the trials, translating for the Polish witnesses who were prisoners at Auschwitz. As the trial progresses, she starts finding bits of evidence of her parents' involvement at the camp, which troubles her greatly. At the same time, her fiance demands she quit the job, refusing to hear her and understand why it's important to her to finish. How does she go on with her life, business as usual, when she learns of the atrocities committed at Auschwitz, and her own family's compliance?

This book is one of the new imprint, HarperVia's first releases, being translated from German to English. It's moving, powerful, thought provoking, and a great read.
