Set in 1960s Germany, just 20 years post WWII, people are still trying to recover from the war. Jobs, families, daily routines, move forward, making the war a distant past, but have they forgotten too much of what happened? Will it come out as the trials are held? I really wanted to like this book, the subject matter is of huge interest to me. However, the writing is stiff and awkward. I realize the author is trying to set a scene, but do we really need to know that the Dachshund backed up to the street lamp and left a steaming pile of poop on the sidewalk? Yes, it was described as steaming. I'm sorry but this much detail makes the reader as uncomfortable as the character was while waiting for her boyfriend to arrive as her parents looked on.
