This is a story of Eva, a young German woman living in post war Germany. She is living the life that society expects of her. She is engaged to a man because that is simply the next step for women at the time. They are expected to get married and quit their jobs. Eva gets hired as a translator for a war crimes trial and she learns more than she wants to know about what happened right under her family's nose during the war. She is plagued with guilt and starts to see the world in a different light as she uncovers the truth about what happened and its impact on people even 20 years after the ending of the war.
I loved this book. I loved the descriptions of Eva's family and their way of life. I found the side plot regarding her sister to be disturbing yet compelling to read. I would definitely recommend this book.
