The German House by Annette Hess is a slow burn of a novel. It's a post-WWII historical fiction novel that explores the role of a young translator involved with the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials.

We find Eva Bruhns waiting for her suitor, Jürgen Schoormann, to propose to her to take her away from her mundane life with her family. This plan is put on pause when she takes the role of a war crimes translator.

What's interesting about this book is that it explores a period of time that is less often written about in terms of WWII historical literature. Most books I've read take place during the war. This book focuses on the aftermath, the retribution, and the recovery.

The book fell just a little flat for me with some of the character development, but overall, it's an interesting take on a time period that should be remembered.
