This was a complex story set after WWII. I had little knowledge of the trials in Germany of the war crimes, although I knew the trials happened. This book made me research what happened--the book was that engaging. It was an amazing and immersive read about the trials and what happened to the main character's family. There were parts of the book that I did not fully understand why they were in there, such as the story line involving her sister, Annegret. I did appreciate the main character's battle within herself regarding her love interest in the book and how he did not want her to take the translator job at the trials. I think that topic is actually very timely--that push pull feeling that we get from others. Some other reviews did remark on the lack of outrage from German citizens in the book, however, I think from history, that has determined to be common. Overall, I really did enjoy the book and the characters.
