I love WWII-era books, so I was excited for the chance to read this book. However, I had a really hard time getting into it (and the lack of designated chapters didn't help). The pace was way too slow for the first half (at least). It did pick up in part three. By that point, Eva is a witness to the pain her countrymen inflicted on those in the concentration camps. Jürgen was a hard character to like, and his relationship with Eva was hard to understand, as was her ignorance about the Holocaust events. The abrupt POV shifts was often jarring and hard to follow at times, but that could be the result of the fact that the author is used to writing for television.

Overall, the book fell a bit short for me, especially in relation to the many other books I've read in this genre. Perhaps some of that is due to the translation of the text. There was a lot of over-detailing (of things truly irrelevant to the plot advancement).
