Not for me

I was interested to read a post-WWII historical fiction set in Germany. I thought this would be an interesting one set in the 1960s, enough time having passed that the younger generation wouldn't remember, or really understand, the war. The synopsis sounded promising, but the first look failed to draw me in. The ordinary beginning, a girl waiting for her beau, provided a nice contrast against the translation job. But the problem was I didn't feel connected to Eva. For historical fiction like this to work, I have to care about the characters. And here, I felt the characters were written a bit too dispassionately, too distant. The part I read just didn't work for me and I'm unlikely to pick up the rest of the book.
