Good Story, But Something is Missing for Me

I feel that there is a good story here, but the only character I really feel curious about is Mister Schoormann, the possible fiancé. Something is missing in the telling of this story, and I don’t know if this is a book that was translated into English and transitions between paragraphs got lost... or what. Some scenes which seemed to be building tension just suddenly shifted to banal conversation. I am also puzzled by the continued spelling changes in Herr Schoorman’s last name. It is understandable that the mother’s mispronunciation early in the book required a single ‘o’ to set up the daughter’s correction which would indicate a change in pronunciation. This could be a clue to something important later on, but then the last name is spelled with 3 o’s and once with 4 o’s. Are these simply typographical errors or are they indications of sarcastic mispronunciations of a name because the family doesn’t really like this dark headed love-interest? Is the 27-year-old female protagonist’s lack of virginity going to be crucial in future chapters? If not, it doesn’t need to be emphasized so much. I think there is a good story buried in cumbersome story-telling here
