Twelve years and an immense amount of scientific progress fit within these pages. Yet, as Dr. Ashley notes these are still the early days of exploring all that genome sequencing has to offer with regard to diagnosing rare diseases, gene therapy, and personalized medicine. Certainly the four parts of this book are filled with medical jargon, but Ashley’s writing includes analogies and daily applications that humanize this incredible scientific revolution. In his last chapter the author looks to the future, including notes on 2020 and the novel coronavirus that took our planet and Twitter by storm. His tone is hopeful, that we, that medicine, will improve our prevention skills and tailor interventions to meet individual needs based on highly specific information. We have the knowledge, but there’s much more to learn.
