This book is a well-written, exciting read for anyone who is interested in medicine and therapies outside of the standard pill-driven treatments. Gene therapy has become more accessible as time and technology advance, so it isn’t a treatment that is solely for the rich anymore. More and more insurance plans are covering the testing as well, so it is a promising therapy for people who need a more individualized approach due to family history of disease or the need for help in diagnosing an “unidentifiable” illness.
Dr Ashley does a terrific job of writing this in what must be as close to layman’s terms as could be possible. Obviously medicine this specific has technical terms that are unfamiliar to anyone not experienced in the medical field, but at no point in the book did I get the feeling that I was being “talked over” or “talked down to”, it just laid it out as letters and words and moved on to the next concept instead of doing a deep, technical dive into the mechanics. I really appreciated the individual stories and the references that he used as well, it really made the story real. My favorite reference in the book was the one used to analogize the cost changes in the therapy, by comparing it to the price of a Ferrari. The thought of a forty cent luxury sports car is just unbelievable, but to imagine the accessibility of treatment where there once wasn’t hope and to be able to individually tailor treatments for everyday diseases like diabetes is just the best news that has come from genome mapping, in my opinion. I highly recommend this book, and I am looking forward to updates in this field as well!
