I love the introduction, starting out with a bleary lack-of-focus on... could it be a war? A cultural event? Looking at the details without cultural context, a punk rock concert could absolutely be mistaken for the field of battle. That crazy, off-kilter perspective continued throughout Tess's section - and I found myself horrified/fascinated by the politics of time travel. And then we have Beth, whose story is more traditional, but much more grizzly (and then there's the sneaking suspicion that Tess and Beth are going to be crossing paths very soon...)
