Claire has left her job and boyfriend in New York, and moved to DC to care for her ailing grandmother, who is most unlikeable and who raised Claire very cruelly. Someone seems to be following Claire, and she has no idea who or why.
The author does an excellent job of conveying Claire’s fear and anxiety, and gradually making the reader like her, in spite of her very thorny personality. (As we get to know her, we find that her upbringing at the hands of her grandmother has shaped her personality to be what it is). The story moves fairly slowly at first, but gathers momentum later when Claire is taken by “the bad guys” who plan to dispose of her body, making it look like an accident. And afterwards we really see the human side of Claire in her conversations with the ex boyfriend.
