Let me start off by saying that I really didn’t know much about the war in Spain in 1957, and very little about the fascist dictator, General Franco. Ruta Sepety’s wrote such a powerful and breathtaking book about the what went on in Spain post war. It was definitely a dark read and at times I did shed a few tears, but this had so much description and historical information that I was captivated from the very first pages. I really loved how this was told from different points of views especially from some who are currently living in Spain and have experienced the pain and despair that General Franco can unleash, and a view from a tourist that doesn’t know much about what really went on.

“A girl of patched pieces, she dreams of new beginnings.”

This is the first book that I have read by Sepety’s and now all of her books are on my tbr. She writes so beautifully that I become so drawn into the world and become attached to the characters. I have to say I am not much into historical fiction, but this was written so well that I would love to explore more books in this genre. Even though it was fiction with some very truthful historical information scattered throughout, I could really picture all of this happening. Sepety’s paints a perfect picture of what true fascism is and what happened in Spain. I learned more from this book, than I ever have in any history class.
