This quote from The Fountains of Silence resonated so much with me on a personal level. โฃThis was my first historical fiction novel in a while. It reminded me why I love the genre. I knew nothing about the long dictatorship of General Francisco Franco in Spain prior to this book. I knew nothing of what the people of Spain lived through during his rule. Reading The Fountains of Silence and learning about this time and place in history filled me with anger and it broke my heart. However, this novel wasnโ€™t just a history lesson (though the research was tremendous), it was a story of choices, of love, of perseverance, and of bravery. โฃ

Donโ€™t let the fact that this book is classified as YA scare you off if YA isnโ€™t your usual go-to. This is a book for everyone. Like in her other books Ruta keeps the chapters short, telling the story from alternating character vantage points. It keeps the story moving and keeps you turning those pages! โฃ

If you havenโ€™t read any Ruta Sepetys yet, you absolutely must. Salt to the Sea is a favorite of mine. Between Shades of Gray was heartbreaking and beautiful. And now The Fountains of Silence is just as good. โฃ
