They stand in line for blood.

This is the opening sentence of the book. The opening line sets the stage of the dictatorship of Spain after the civil war.

Ruta Sepetys is a brilliant author and writes about many periods in time that have been forgotten. The Fountains of Silence gave the Spanish people a voice of sorts after most of the world has forgotten the horrendous time period.

The Fountains of Silence follows a young American photographer visiting Spain with his family, Daniel, and a Spanish native working at the hotel he is staying at, Ana. The two start to connect on mutual interests and similarities in their background and eventually become a bit of a Sherlock Holmes duo to uncover many dark secrets.

Estamos más guapas con la boca cerrada. We are prettier with our mouths shut.

This is what some of the women in this book are told in order to preserve the secrecy of “under the table” deals. I think this line specifically will resonate with many young women who read this book and who will connect it back to their own lives.

In addition with the dictatorship of Spain, this book also speaks very loudly of privilege and racism.

”You feel powerful because you have money. Your money buys our wine and sunshine, but it doesn’t buy the right to our history.”

Overall, this book was a hard-hitting, and fantastic read about a topic I knew very little about. Ruta Sepetys did amazing as always, I can’t wait to read any other book she writes to see what other unknown part of history she will give a voice to.
