I only recently discovered Ruta Sepetys, but she has already become one of my favorite, must-read/buy authors. The Fountains of Silence was a beautifully-written novel that focuses on 1950's fascist Spain; I am usually drawn to WWII historical fiction (but aren't most people?), so this was a totally new era of history and backdrop to me!

First, Sepetys does a create job at showing the polarity between the characters and their circumstances. We see a rich American tourist, and a hard-working Spanish woman, who works hard to provide for her struggling family. However, Sepetys also does a great job at showing their connection, friendship, and eventual romance.

The ending made me a bit sad--only because you grow to want the best for these characters and, when you're forced into a delayed happiness, it is bittersweet.
