I am a big fan of Ruta Sepetys and was eagerly awaiting the release of this novel after reading (and loving) Salt To The Sea. Fountains of Silence did not disappoint. Featuring characters living under a fascist dictatorship in Spain, one of the things I loved about this story was the setting and time period. It is not one that is popular in YA historical fiction and something I knew little about but find myself wanting to learn more. Each of the characters' storylines was engaging and were woven together expertly to create a mysterious drama amongst the gorgeous setting of Spain. Sepetys wove humor and hardship effortlessly so that, while the topic and book itself was heavy, the reader never felt overwhelmed with hopelessness. An excellent historical fiction for readers looking for something new.
