Read for the Barnes & Noble YA Book Club November Pick

I honestly wouldn't have picked this up on my own, but I'm glad I did. It was an interesting read even if it felt a little dull at times. If you're a fan of history and curious about the Spanish Civil War, this digs into that. More than just the politics, it digs into the families left behind by the casualties of war. The orphans of war. The babies brought into a world of turmoil. I think that's what I found most interesting about this - the story these people help.

The chapters were short and jumped through many perspectives, so it was both hard to keep up and made it a fast read.

I listened to the audiobook and I enjoyed being able to hear the Spanish being spoke. Spanish is not a language I know anything of, so it was nice to hear it spoken rather than just read it. The narrator was good, I liked her and would listen to her again, she had an easy to listen to voice. Throughout this book there were radio broadcasts or announcements about the political climate of the time and I found that unique and I liked that as audio - they made it sound like it was a transmission.

So yes, I'm only giving this a 3 because I did find it boring at times, but thats on me, not the book. I'm not the biggest historical fiction fan - I'm picky - but I thought it was written well and a good read. 3 stars is still a solid "I liked it" rating to me!
