I appreciate this book for telling me a story I’d never been exposed to before. I had never even heard of Franco, let alone the brutal life many lived under his rule.

In the beginning, i struggled with this story and almost gave up on it because of the quick transitions between characters without me understanding how the stories were related or having enough time to get to know each character. Because this is a YA book, i understand that the author is catering to an audience with, perhaps, a lower attention span and chose short chapters for that reason.

However, by the time i got to page 100 or so, i was invested in the book because i realized that all of the stories except daniel’s are about one family, and Daniel comes to meet each of them and their lives become intertwined.

By the end of the story, i learned some things, but there was never any real climax or action in the story. I also did not get closure on certain things. For example, why was that nun carrying a dead baby through the streets in the beginning? That made no sense to me in the larger scheme of things.

This is a good introductory story to the dictatorship of Franco, but not necessarily the most entertaining or thorough novel.
