I was pleasantly surprised with how much I loved this book. I am not a huge history fan, but I have been loving all the historical fiction books lately. This was my first book by Ruta Sepetys, but it certainly won’t be my last!

The book starts off in Madrid, Spain, in the year 1957, when it’s under dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. The book is written from the point of views of Ana and Daniel. Ana is a young women is working at the Hilton who needs to stay out of trouble and help earn money for her family. Daniel is visiting from Texas and his dad is there to work on an oil deal. Daniel is also a wonderful photographer.

Ana is assigned to Daniel’s family while she is at work. Ana and Dan quickly start to become great friends. I loved getting to see their friendship develop and see where it would go. I also love the dual point of views of their story.

This book was simply amazing. I was so invested in all the characters stories, and loved seeing what would happen next. This book had it all, friendships, romance, courage, loyalty, and resilience. The author also really did her research on the 1950s era, and it helped me follow along well! I would highly recommend this book.
