This was my first Ruta Sepetys Book. It is a historical novel (very well researched) about life and secrets in Franco's Spain, following the civil war. The novel is set in 1955. It is written in the POV of Dan, an 18 year old American visiting Spain with his parents, and Ana, a hotel maid. They strike up a friendship and a relationship of sorts and through them we learn how women were perceived in Spain during the time of Franco - up until his death in 1974, we learn of children placed in orphanages and the fear which reigned and governed life. We follow Dan's summer in Spain, as he gets to meet Ana's family and the little of their story that Ana reveals. We get to know about Ana's story from her POV.
This was such an incredible read for me. But, I will admit to being biased, as my 4 grandparents were spanish. It's a history I did not know, and a history that my aunts and cousins grew up under. Suffice it to say that my mom was Basque and my father was Galician.
If you love history (well researched history), you love light romance and most importantly a well written book, then please read this one.
