This book takes place in 1957 Madrid under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Daniel, son to a foreign business man, and Spanish local Ana’s lives cross paths and intertwine to reveal dark secrets of Franco’s rule and the harsh realities of the Spanish Civil War.
This period in Spain is not a time that has been covered a lot. I was completely fascinated by this story, and the amount of detail and research Sepetys weaved into the plights of the country and these characters was incredible. The characters themselves were well rounded and relatable. I was entranced with the history as well as the storyline, which made for a fantastic read. I loved it. Highly recommend.
