The majority of this book takes place in Madrid, Spain in 1957. I learned so much about Spain’s history from this fantastic novel. There is even a glossary of Spanish words at the end of the book. This wonderful story has fun extras such as; photographs, interviews, press releases, and other historical information laced throughout the book. I enjoyed reading these because it made the story feel so real to me. ⁣

The Fountains of Silence follows Daniel Matheson, son of a Texas oil tycoon. Daniel’s family is staying at the ritzy Hilton Hotel in Madrid. Daniel befriends many of the Spanish locals and takes photographs for them in hopes he will get the shot he needs to win a photography contest. He then meets Ana, a Spanish maid at the hotel assigned to his family. Ana is very discreet and Daniel soon learns that Spain isn’t what it seems to be. ⁣

This book did not read like a 489-page novel, I couldn’t put it down. It had very short chapters which made me keep telling myself, “one more chapter.” This book had everything; secrets, drama, history, romance, mystery. ⁣
This is the first book I have read by this author and it will not be my last! ⁣
