I am not very familiar with Spain's history or revolution, so this book took me to a time and place that was brand new to me. I was immediately drawn into the disparity between the wealthy Americans and the reality of life for the Spanish people and found that element of the story to be thought-provoking and powerful.

I could relate to Daniel and his struggle with following his own dream and following in his father's footsteps. His desire to paint a true picture of the reality of life in Spain sent him on a journey he never expected.

Ana's story is one of strength and grace amidst suffering and heartbreak. She was determined to do right by her family, even though it meant putting herself and her heart second.

While each Ana and Daniel are on their own sometimes heart-wrenching journeys, I kept waiting for them to find a way to come together in the end.
