This was my favorite book of 2019 so far! I love Ruta Sepetys so I knew I was going to love this book, but it exceeded my expectations. Set in post World War II Spain, Sepetys delves into a hidden history that still isn't talked about much. I had never read a book about Franco's regime before, but would love to dive deeper into this hidden history and the Valley of the Fallen!
As always, Sepetys's writing is captivating, taking you back in time. It's so hard to put the book down to do daily life. The romance in the book isn't cliche at all. Each character's story is one I would love to dive deeper into. Personally, I would love to hear more about Fuga and Purificacion's experiences. The other thing I would have loved was in the end, hearing more about the time period that was skipped, I would like to know more about what happened to the side characters. But I would recommend this to anyone with a slight interest in Spain or in historical fiction!
