Ruta Sepetys is the queen of historical fiction. I was so excited to read her newest release, even if the length of the story was rather daunting to start. This story takes place in Spain in 1957, when Spain is under the facist ruler General Francisco Franco. Even though it is not a great place to live for the locals, tourists are flocking to Madrid. 18 year old Daniel arrives in Madrid with his wealthy parents, his father an oil tycoon. He plans to photograph much of the city in an attempt to connect with his own mother's Spanish heritage. While there, he meets Ana, who works as a housekeeper in the fancy hotel where Daniel and his parents are staying. Daniel's photographs inadvertently lead him to discover a dark secret happening right under their noses at orphanages in Madrid. Daniel and Ana work to make a difference and bring wrongs to light, but at what cost to their own lives? This book was amazing and I highly recommend it. The writing is beautiful and the characters are compelling.
