I have read 2 of Ruta’s other books and am an enormous fan of her writing. With changing points of view’s she is able to explore the narrative from different sensibilities and opinions. Fountains of Silence is set in Madrid in 1957 after the Fascist government opened Spain to tourism.

The novel is set surrounding one family in particular, including siblings Julia, Ana, and Rafa whose father was shot by the Guardia Civil and mother was imprisoned for wanting to open a Montessori school as that would be something outside the control of the Catholic Church. Through the eyes of Rafa who digs graves and the cousin Puri who works at an orphanage we learn what the Fascist Spain government is doing to children. Through the eyes of Ana working at the Madrid Hilton and Daniel, an American staying there from Texas, we get a more American and political view of the story.

Another 5 star read.
