Ruta Sepetys can do no wrong - no matter the context, she’s able to sweep you up and capture the essence of any time period she sets her novels in. I can’t contain my excitement, though, for the premise of this novel; post-Spanish Civil War literature is hard to come by, let alone YA narratives. Having traveled to Spain this year, I’m instantly brought back to the warmth and spirit of the Spanish people, but can feel their hurt and trauma with this excerpt. Sepetys always keeps the characters complex, the descriptions rich, and the storytelling heartwarming (or heart-wrenching at times). I can’t wait to see which road ”Fountains of Silence” goes down!
