The story starts out with women standing patiently in line for blood. At first, it makes one wonder if it is symbolic for the entire book, or literal. In the glimpse we the readers get, we see that it is literal. They need it for blood sausage. We soon get a look at a man who has flashbacks of another time when life was more gruesome and terrifying. A must read to find out what happens to these characters.
