The First Mistake is an absolutely delicious mystery thriller. To me, it is the literary equivalent of gourmet s'mores. You have the comforting, familiar tropes of assumed identity, long term stalking, secrets and money being the root of all evil, mixed in completely new ways.

The first third of the book is told from the perspective of "the wife", Alice. She is a fragile, broken woman due to losing her first husband, the true love of her life, in a tragic accident, and now struggling in her second marriage.

The second part of the book goes back 10 years and is told from the perspective from "the best friend", Beth. She is a feisty twenty-something swept off her feet by a dashing con man before she is left pregnant and penniless.

The third part brings us back to the present and is explosive in how Alice and Beth's lives intertwine. You will think you have everything figured out more than once, but the truth will be so much more shocking.

This is definitely a summer beach/lake/pool must read!
