I think that this was more a misfire based on my own expectations. I went in thinking that it was going to be a thriller, or at least a suspenseful read. But instead it's more about two women who were screwed over by the same man, and the secrets that they keep from each other as they start to piece it all together. It's told from the perspectives of Alice and Beth. Alice still has the personal baggage and trauma of losing her first husband, and Beth has always been there for her ever since they met. But as the story unfolds we find out that Beth has been hiding things from Alice, and that the betrayal may not be completely coincidental. The mystery was fine, but the stakes didn't really build for me and by the time the multiple reveals and back stabbings came out I didn't really care too much. I think that if I had gone in realizing this was more an examination of relationships between women and lovers and women and friends i would have liked it more, but I expected something else, and therefore it wasn't my cup of tea.

THE FIRST MISTAKE will no doubt satisfy other readers, as the hype and buzz has been fairly positive. For whatever reason it didn't click with me.
