Couldn't put it down

When I started The First Mistake, I was annoyed with Alice and her story. She seemed paranoid and naive. He marriage was supposedly perfect, following another supposedly perfect marriage where her husband died. Her kids were perfect, she was great at her job and everything was wonderful. Only, it was clear everything wasn't wonderful. Her best friend has never met her husband, for example. Which sounds odd, considering they both have children the same age.

The story then switches in Part 2 to her best friend's story and it's clear that the guy she's falling for is using her, but now she's the naive one and doesn't see it. Obviously this is all going to tie together, but it was seemingly a tired twist that has been used before.

The other thing that bothered me were all the extraneous characters and storylines that didn't go anywhere. A lot was left as a loose end, which was frustrating. Also, the timeline didn't make sense for how things happened. I tried to figure it out but then couldn't be bothered to go back to the beginning to check the details.

I sped through the book and I didn't want to put it down, so that's great. But I wasn't thrilled with the direction the story took. Like I said, I was bothered by Alice in the beginning, annoyed by Beth's ignorance in the middle and thought the end required a little bit of suspended disbelief.
